The college mace

The mace, originally a weapon, has evolved into a decorative symbol of office representing the dignity of the college. Today, the college mace is carried in academic procession during formal or special convocation ceremony to project institution image and meaning of its symbolism.

The most senior trustee or other friends of the college could also carry it at ceremonial functions.

Our mace is carried in an upright position a few steps in front of the president of the college until the speaker’s platform is reached. The mace bearer faces the audience and continues to present the mace until all individual in the academic march have reached their seats. At this point, the mace bearer places the mace on the “standard” where it remains throughout all academic ceremonies. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the mace bearer moves to take up the mace in order to lead the recessional.
